| Ozone treatment Ozone treatment in extrusion coating machines In extrusion coating machines and laminating machines it is possible to improve adhesion to the substrate material and obtain higher speeds by ozone treatment, oxidizing of the plastic melt. Ozone, an intensive oxidizing agent, is produced
from air in the ozonizer at a rate of up to 2000 g/h and blown below the extruder die
against the plastic melt, which then oxidizes and obtains improved adhesive properties. Using a SORBEX® ozonizer it is possible to reduce the melting temperature of plastic to less than 300°C while maintaining laminating strength. The oxidation of the plastic which normally results from the high temperature is effected solely by the ozone on one side of the material, the coating side. This solves any sealing problems in the laminate produced with this method. This process offers the advantage of a great reduction in the inherent plastic smell particularly for the food packaging industry, thus reducing taste impairment of the packed product, which is otherwise unavoidable due to crack processes at high melting temperatures.
